Avoiding Metabolic Syndrome

Did you know that over half the adult population in the United States has some form of Metabolic Disease or Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels — that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

The good news is that it can be reversed if caught early.

Who typically has metabolic syndrome?

  • People with central obesity (increased fat in the abdomen/waist).
  • People with diabetes mellitus or strong family history of diabetes mellitus.
  • People with other clinical features of “insulin resistance” including skin changes of acanthosis nigricans (“darkened skin” on the back of the neck or underarms) or skin tags (usually on the neck).
  • As you grow older, your risk of developing metabolic syndrome significantly increases, affecting more than 40% of people in their 60’s and 70’s.

Let’s talk about central obesity — specifically an “apple” body shape. Central obesity is when you have excess fat around your midsection. This puts a tremendous amount of stress on your heart. Even normal weight people who carry their fat at their waistline may be at higher risk of death over the years than overweight or obese people whose fat is more concentrated on the hips and thighs.

If your waist is larger than your hips, you’re at increased risk for disease. Risk increases for men if their waist circumference is larger than 40” and 35” for women. Fat that builds around the abdominal organs is particularly linked to diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic abnormalities than fat that lies under the skin.

Sit-ups are NOT the solution. It’s weight loss. It’s a healthier diet and physical activity.

Excess fat, especially visceral fat (the deep abdominal fat that surrounds your organs) is dangerous to your health. Here are the multiple problems associated with excess fat:

  • Arthritis
  • Atherosclerosis from elevated blood lipids and inflammation
  • Leptin Resistance
  • Depression
  • Type 2 Diabetes/Pre-Diabetes/Insulin Resistance
  • Blood glucose spikes that lead to fat storage bombard our Autonomic and Peripheral nervous system ultimately causing permanent nerve damage
  • Cancer
  • Fatty Liver Disease
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Dementia
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Decreases in Serotonin levels affecting mood and depression
  • Has been implicated in multiple inflammatory pathways that are toxic to the body
  • Disrupts normal hormonal functions affecting Estrogen in both men and women and male hormones in women
  • Releases signaling molecules like cytokines that are pro-inflammatory which interfere with hormones that regulate appetite, weight, mood, and brain function
  • Traps toxins and heavy metals in your body
